A special CBI court of Panchkula sentenced Nitin Garg, ex-Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax Department, to four years of imprisonment for demanding a bribe of ₹2 lakh from a private firm proprietor for giving relief while levying penalty. Nitin Garg was posted in Sirsa, Harayana.
“Corruption in a civilised society is a disease like cancer,” the court said. Garg has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh and imprisonment of four years under section 13(1) (d) punishable under section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act along with a fine of Rs 3 lakh. Both sentences will run concurrently.
