The hearing of Mukul Roy’s anti-defection case has ended in the Calcutta High Court. The case was being heard by a division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Rajarshi Bharadwaj. The verdict of the case is expected to be announced on Thursday. If the verdict is announced against Mukul at the hearing, his post of chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) may be revoked.

On March 21, the Calcutta High Court gave BJP two more days to file an affidavit in the anti-defection law case. The BJP had said that the affidavit given by the opposition had reached them late. As a result, it will take two more days to file a reply affidavit. A division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Rajarshi Bharadwaj granted the petition. The hearing in this case has been postponed.

The lawsuit was filed against Mukul seeking the dismissal of his MLA and the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) post. The BJP has also claimed that the opposition deserves the post. The court also summoned the affidavit of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Although the Speaker gave the affidavit, the BJP could not give a counter affidavit. They said that the Speaker did not give them the affidavit on March 17 as directed by the High Court. It was given on March 20. That is why the answer could not be made.

Opposition leader Shuvendu Adhikari has filed a case in the Supreme Court seeking dismissal of Mukul’s MLA post. On the other hand, BJP MLA Ambika Roy filed a case in the apex court seeking dismissal of the PAC chairmanship. In two cases last month, a bench of Justice Nageshwar Rao and Justice BR Gawai directed the Calcutta High Court to dispose the case within a month. As a result, after postponing there remains only a week for the verdict.
