The Congress on Saturday hit out at the government over the ban on the export of wheat, saying it was an “anti-farmer” measure as it deprives farmers of reaping the benefit of higher export prices.

In a move that the Congress said was an “anti-farmer” measure, the government said on Saturday it has banned wheat exports with immediate effect as part of measures to control rising domestic prices.

The Congress today hit out at the government over the ban on the export of wheat and said such steps are “anti-farmer” as it deprives farmers of reaping higher benefits. The party also dismissed suggestions that the move will help curb soaring inflation by bringing down domestic prices, saying the country has sufficient stocks to keep prices under control.

India has banned wheat exports with immediate effect as part of measures to control rising domestic prices, an official notification said on Friday. The move will hurt farmers, who have been enjoying high prices in the global market due to a fall in supplies from major exporters such as Russia and Australia. India was estimated to have exported around 10 million tonnes of wheat so far this year but its shipments fell as supplies piled up at government-run warehouses amid stronger than expected demand from local flour mills.

The Congress also said that such a move would not help control prices. It has also opposed the central government’s proposal to allow exports of pulses, saying it would lead to an increase in domestic prices and encourage hoarding by traders. NCP spokesman Nawab Malik claimed that there was no need for the export ban as wheat stocks were adequate.”There is no need of this step. It is not going to benefit anyone,” he said, adding that exporting wheat just before the harvest will lead to higher prices domestically as well.
