Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said his government will soon end the “VIP culture” in state jails by converting “VIP cells” there into administrative blocks.

With an aim to end the “VIP culture” in jails and make them correctional institutions, the Punjab government will soon convert “VIP cells” into administrative blocks and ensure that wrongdoers serve their sentences there, State Cabinet Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said it was his dream to turn jails into state-of-the-art correctional facilities, where prisoners are not only reformed but also offered vocational training so they could become self-reliant while they were behind bars. He said the last 22 years were witness to rampant corruption and failed attempts at reforming the prisoners, which led to the loss of lives in clashes with other inmates and long strikes in jails.
