Bengali again triumphs the world; Samir Banerjee lifts the winning trophy


Dhiraj Das:DNI; A Bengali-origin American tennis player Samir Banerjee won the title of Wimblendon 2021 boys’ single on Sunday. He made history, didn’t even stand his opponent Victor Lilov, the margin between them was 7-5, 6-3.

At the age of only 17, the fledgling tennis player was playing the grand slam for the second time, and he won over his opponent Victor Lilov on Sunday. The final match lasted for one hour and 22 minutes.

“Remember the name – Samir Banerjee. The American wins his first junior Grand Slam singles title by beating Victor Lilov in the boys’ singles final,” Wimbledon official page’s tweet.

At the junior French Open, Samir’s world rank was 19, and he was knocked out from the first round.

Although Samir was born in New Jersey, America, his parents hailed from India. His father Kunal Banerjee is from Assam and mother Usha Banerjee is from Hyderabad, then they migrated to America.

Before Samir, Leander Peas was the last Indian to win Wimbledon title in 1990.
