Arunava Bhattacharya, DNI: Maruti which started making vehicles for the Indian middle class with the very first Maruti 800 is still India’s favorite according to the recent Car sales numbers.
As the covid-19 pandemic continues, Indian middle class are faced with tough choices regarding their transportation for daily uses and vacations. With local trains, metro rails and buses plying in limited numbers and frequency, many are opting to travel in their own vehicles. This has resulted in the increased number of car sales in 2021. But what is India’s favorite car at the moment? No prize for guessing it is still Maruti.
8 among the top 10 cars which have been sold until July 2021 are of the Maruti. Maruti which started manufacturing for the Indian middle class segment with the Maruti 800 is still the undisputed ruler of the segment. Maruti’s Wagon R, Swift, Dzire and Alto are still the choice of car for the Indian middle class within the range of 10 Lakhs while Baleno, Ertiga and Breza are also catching up.
Till July 2021 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R saw the highest sales and growth. Wagon R has so far sold more than 22,000 units compared to last year’s 13,000 units which resulted in a 69% YoY growth. Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon have also made it to the top 10 list which is otherwise heavily dominated by Maruti.
