Watch old photos of your loved ones come to life in just a few seconds – courtesy – Deep Nostalgia an AI-powered service from Online Genealogy services company MyHeritage. You can take any old photos, upload them in the App, and within a few seconds, you can watch them spring to life as they will turn their heads, wink, and even smile.

Deep Nostalgia takes photos no matter how old and uses AI to animate facial expressions on those photos to give an effect of them coming to life. The App is using millions of pre-recorded videos of facial expressions and using AI to apply those on the photos that fit the most. The primary purpose of this being to watch your deceased loved ones in action or life which seems like an idea straight out of Sci-fi fantasy.

The App comes under the name MyHeritage which is the company that owns this App. This App is available for download on both Android and iOS. So once you have the App you just need to sign up by providing your basic credentials such as Name and Email ID. Post sign up you can upload the picture of your choice and wait for a few seconds before it comes to life.

Since I am personally a bit paranoid with regards to privacy this idea seemed like a deal that is too good to be true. I mean a company that will collect your picture and then animates it free of cost seems like a bluff. So I first tried it with pictures of famous personalities available on the internet to check if the claims are really true. I must say the results are astounding. The facial expressions are scarily realistic and the best part is that you can download the short 14 seconds video as a memory.

Currently, only headshots are supported for animation and after uploading the person in the photo will be doing all sorts of actions such as smiling, winking, and moving their heads. However, with the advancement of AI, it seems we might soon be able to see the person in photos in full action such as moving, smiling, or even speaking perhaps. This App can also animate photos of sculptures, portraits and has been used by archaeologists to animate the faces of ancient sculptures of Alexander the Great and others.

This App was launched in February 2021 and has become quite famous as expected. Coming to the privacy part the terms of usage clearly states that the photos uploaded shall not be shared with any other third parties and for the photos that are being uploaded without signing up shall be deleted to respect user privacy. I had personally used the services without the App from the mobile browser which is also supported. You can also access the service from the following URL: if you don’t want to install the App on your device.

MyHeritage the company that has created this service is an Online Genealogy provider that helps their users to store and trace their family tree and get information of their lineage among other things. This company was started in 2003 and is headquartered in Yehuda, Israel. As of now, the company has more than 52 million family trees stored.
